Common causes for this symptom.

Latch assembly worn.
The plastic catch inside the door or lid has worn down so it no longer engages the strike. Often shows up as needing to slam the door, then one day it stops engaging at all.

Lid switch mechanically misaligned.
On top-load washers, the lid pin no longer engages the underlying switch — sometimes from a bent strike plate, sometimes from a worn hinge. We re-align or replace as needed.

Door strike plate bent.
The metal strike on the cabinet has flexed out of position. Common on dryers where the door has been overloaded or used as a folding shelf. A quick straighten or part swap.

Child-lock or door-lock electronics.
On front-load washers and electronic dryers, the door-lock motor or solenoid has failed. The lock engages but the controller never receives confirmation, so the cycle never starts.
