Why won’t my washer drain at the end of the cycle?

A washer that ends a cycle with standing water is almost always a drain pump problem. The most common cause is a foreign object — coin, hair tie, sock, or underwire — jammed in the pump impeller. Other possibilities are a kinked drain hose, a clogged front-loader coin trap, or a fouled pressure switch tube that prevents the control board from advancing to the drain step. Diagnosis takes 30–60 minutes.

How do I get the water out of my washer before the technician arrives?

On a front-loader, open the small access panel near the bottom front and use the small drain hose inside the coin trap to drain into a shallow pan — slowly, since the tub holds gallons. On a top-loader, the easiest method is bucketing the water out from above. If your floor is finished, lay towels first. Or simply leave it: we bring shop-vac equipment and can drain it on-site as part of the diagnostic.

Common causes for this symptom.

Drain pump impeller jammed.

Coins, hair ties, socks, and underwire from bras work their way past the tub and lodge in the drain pump. The motor still tries to spin but stalls. We clear the foreign object and test the pump.
Drain hose kinked or clogged.

The corrugated hose at the back of the washer kinks against the wall or clogs with lint and detergent residue. Sometimes a 10-minute fix once we can see it.
Pressure switch tube fouled.

The small rubber tube that lets the control board read the water level can fill with sludge. The board never gets the "tub empty" signal, so the drain cycle never advances.
Coin trap full (front-loaders).

Most front-loaders have an accessible filter near the bottom front panel. Years of debris collect there and choke the drain. We clear it and check the impeller for damage at the same time.
