Common causes for this symptom.

Broken drive belt.
The most common cause. The motor runs and hums, but the drum sits still. Belts wear with age and snap suddenly, usually mid-cycle.

Motor coupler sheared.
On direct-drive washers and some dryers, a small plastic-and-rubber coupler links the motor to the transmission. It is designed to fail before something more expensive does.

Idler pulley seized.
The spring-loaded pulley that keeps belt tension has frozen on its shaft. The belt either slips against the pulley or burns through within a load or two.

Drive motor failure.
The motor itself has burned out — usually preceded by a humming sound, a thermal cutoff trip, or an intermittent stall. Less common but possible on older machines.
