Common causes for this symptom.

Drum bearings worn (front-loaders).
A growing roar that gets louder during spin. Replacement is labor-intensive — for older front-loaders the bill can approach the cost of a replacement washer. We will say so straight before quoting.

Shock absorbers or suspension springs worn (top-loaders).
The tub bangs against the cabinet during spin. Top-loader shocks are a moderate repair and a clear fix — once they are replaced, the noise stops.

Motor coupler failing.
A grinding or stuttering noise during agitation on direct-drive washers, or a stuttering hum on direct-drive dryers. The coupler is designed to be the sacrificial part and is straightforward to swap.

Foreign object trapped.
Coins, hair clips, or underwire stuck between the inner and outer tub. A loud rattle that comes and goes with drum position. Quick to clear once we have the cabinet open.
