Dana Point Coastal Homes: Salt-Air Maintenance Your Laundry Needs

Anything west of Del Obispo in Dana Point deals with corrosion sooner than the OC average. Homes between PCH and the harbor sit close enough to the water that salt air is a daily fact, and laundry equipment shows it within a few years. Homes farther inland, up in the Dana Hills neighborhoods, get less of it.

The most common Dana Point service call is a dryer that has developed a metallic squeal or rumble. On Whirlpool, Maytag, Kenmore, and GE dryers, the drum support rollers ride on metal shafts, and salt-laden air rusts both the shaft and the bearing inside the roller. Once the roller wobbles, the drum no longer spins true, and the drive belt either jumps the pulley or breaks. The fix is straightforward (new rollers, idler pulley, belt) but caught early it is much smaller.

On front-load washers we replace door latch assemblies more often in Dana Point than almost anywhere else in OC. The electromechanical latch is sensitive to humidity and corrosion, and once the contacts oxidize the machine reads “door open” and refuses to start the cycle.

Practical maintenance for Dana Point homeowners: run the laundry room exhaust or open a window during cycles so humid air does not sit on the equipment, wipe down the exterior chassis monthly, and address any new noise from the dryer immediately rather than letting it run for weeks. If your front-load washer has started giving a door-locked error or refusing to start, the door latch is usually the cause and it is an affordable part if it has not damaged the wiring harness yet.
